Villa1951 A 1950’s Villa in Glyfada

( description )
The Villa Rontiri in Glyfada, a seaside suburb of Athens, constitutes a representative example of mid-20th-century residential architecture. Erected in the 1950s, in a historically distinguished neighborhood where many prominent Athenians established their summer residences, the villa reflects the values of post-war domestic architecture in Greece. The post-war villa required extensive renovation in order to reclaim its former glory. Our approach was to reimagine the space without erasing its architectural essence. The original floors, staircase, and stained-glass windows were carefully preserved and restored, as they embody the true spirit of the house.

The two-storey structure, with a total surface of 250 sq. m. (2,700 sq. ft.), was organized in such a way as to operate either as a unified dwelling or as two autonomous apartments of 125 sq. m. (1,450 sq. ft.) each. This spatial flexibility was addressed without compromising the coherence of the architectural composition.

Each level comprises a spacious living and dining area for eight persons, two main bedrooms, and one secondary bedroom with a double bed. Furthermore, each apartment includes a fully equipped kitchen, one principal bathroom with bathtub, and a secondary bathroom with shower facilities.

At the back of the villa lies a privately owned, enchanting garden with a glass-walled pool, offering guests a serene retreat to relax, indulge and enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings. The intervention, while adapting the residence to contemporary standards of comfort and use, sought to underline its historical continuity and architectural character.
