Athenian Mosaic

( description )
This project focuses on the architectural redesign of an apartment in an 80’s-era building in Agia Paraskevi, Athens. The goal was to retain the maximal aesthetic of the period while introducing modern materials and contemporary technologies. A strong emphasis was placed on preserving the original character of the space, using elements such as mosaic flooring and textured glass to bridge past and present.

In the house entrance the round vestibule is covered with wood and is being unified with the buffet, embracing the guest to enter in the living.

The buffet descriptively separates the kitchen to the living and is a point of reference for the rest of the house. Made out of semipermeable glass with a texture, the natural light and shadows penetrate partially. An open bookshelf visually divides the study from the living and dining, whereas in the kitchen area prevail the intense textures and colors.

The so-called 80’s aesthetic is being visualized in the use of the mosaic floor, made out of different marbles atop of a neutral pink basis. The mosaic floor runs from the hallway, to the kitchen and wc.

The kids’ room and bathroom was imagined as a soft haven of play -where gentle textures meet a palette of muted whimsy, inviting both rest and adventure.

In the terrace we created a summer living room where the family spends most of her time during the warm months of the year. The clay sunbreaks in the western side of the terrace partially isolate the living area from the afternoon sun. Part of the terrace is being disrupted by the semi-circular terrazzo tiles that create the boundary between sun and shadow, chiaro and scuro, green and beige.
