Adding new floors atop an old building in Koukaki

( description )

This architectural project focuses on the vertical expansion of a 1950s Art Deco building in Athens, adding four new floors while preserving and enhancing its original character. The design seamlessly integrates old and new elements, establishing a clear dialogue between past and present, and giving the structure a renewed identity.

The existing building, highlighted in terracotta, maintains its original door and window frames, paying homage to its historical roots. In contrast, the new addition adopts a minimalist white aesthetic, emphasizing the transition between eras. A defining black line marks the intersection between the two structures, symbolizing the shift in architectural language.
Green-painted niches within the extension serve as spaces for flowerbeds, bringing an organic element to the façade. The lightweight metal balconies maintain the building’s structural balance while their internal surfaces feature Art Deco tiles, reinforcing the historical reference in a contemporary setting.
